IMHO, Neil deGrasse Tyson said it best in the first Moon to Mars Commission hearing. He said (and I'm paraphrasing) that he saw the Apollo scientists and engineers on the television, and didn't see anyone who looked like him. He said that he was inspired to a career in space in spite of Apollo, not because of it.

While I wish there were representation from the privately-funded space industry on the Moon to Mars Commission, I am very proud that our country has come so far in embracing its own diversity. Thank you, Neil, for following your bold career vision. You are a huge asset to the space community.
